Privacy and cookies
Deutsch Lernen is free and runs on very little of your data. This page says exactly what is stored, where, and what you can switch off.
The short version
- Your progress is saved in your own browser. You do not need an account to use the course.
- Nothing optional loads until you allow it. Analytics and advertising stay off until you say otherwise.
- Speaking practice never leaves your device. Your microphone audio is not uploaded or recorded.
- You can change or withdraw your cookie choices at any time from .
What is stored without an account
The course keeps your progress in your browser's local storage on the device you are using. That covers which lessons you have completed, your flashcard schedule, your XP and streak, your chosen interface language and your light or dark theme.
This never reaches a server unless you create an account. It is not a cookie and it is not shared. Clearing your browser data removes it, and "Reset progress" in the account menu removes it deliberately.
This storage is strictly necessary: it is the service. Without it the course could not remember a single thing you did.
What is stored if you create an account
An account is optional, and its only purpose is to carry your progress between devices. If you create one, the following is stored by Supabase, which hosts the database:
- Your email address, and a name if you chose to give one.
- A secure hash of your password. The password itself is never stored or visible.
- The same progress data described above, as a single record belonging to your account.
Your record is readable only by you. When you sign out, the copy on that device is erased and the account keeps the original.
Cookies and similar technologies
Strictly necessary — always on
Your progress, your language, your theme and your sign-in session. These exist because you asked for the service, they are not used to profile you, and they are not shared with anyone.
Analytics — optional, off by default
If you allow it, Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used — clicks, scrolling, where people get stuck — so the course can be improved. Clarity masks text input by default and never records password fields. If you decline, its script is never loaded at all.
Advertising — optional, off by default
If you allow it, Google AdSense shows ads, which is what pays for hosting and keeps the course free. Google may use cookies to make those ads more relevant. If you decline, the AdSense script is never loaded and no ad cookies are set.
Declining is one click and carries no penalty: every lesson, exercise and tool works identically either way.
What is never collected
- Microphone audio. Speaking practice uses your browser's own speech recognition. Audio is processed on your device and never uploaded to us.
- Anything you write in a lesson. Writing tasks are checked in your browser.
- Payment details. There is nothing to buy, so none are ever requested.
Changing your mind
Open to review or change your choices. Withdrawing is as easy as granting, which is how it should be.
One honest detail: a script that has already run in the current page cannot be recalled. Switching something off stops it from loading on your next page view, and reloading the page applies it immediately.
Your choice is remembered for a year, after which you will be asked again.
Your rights
If you are in the UK, the EU or another region with comparable law, you have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, take it elsewhere, and object to processing. In practice:
- Access and portability — "Export progress" in the account menu downloads everything the course holds about you.
- Deletion — "Reset progress" clears the device. To delete an account and its stored record entirely, contact us and it will be removed.
- Objection — decline analytics and advertising in cookie settings. Nothing else profiles you.
Children
The course is suitable for learners of any age, but accounts are not intended for children under 16. If you believe a child has created one, contact us and it will be deleted.
Contact
For anything on this page — a deletion request, a question, a correction — write to REPLACE_WITH_CONTACT_EMAIL.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected, the consent banner will appear again so you can make a fresh choice.
